Empowering others is the steppingstone to uplift a society.

It’s been nearly four decades since Shibu and I consciously started investing our time and energy into social causes that are close to our hearts. We both come from the middle-class section of society. Our achievements, whatever they may be, are because early on in life, we got opportunities to pursue higher education. We believe that education is a passport for upward mobility and at the cornerstone for national development. Therefore, the primary focus of our philanthropic journey has been education.

Through my experience, I have learnt that continuous and consistent efforts are required to bring change.  All our efforts in the education and health sectors are designed towards empowering individuals. Merely helping someone does not make them independent tomorrow. Providing them with the right set of tools and skill sets through education can enable an individual to make decisions that are right for themselves, their family and for society.

Our interventions under the aegis of Shibulal Family Philanthropic Initiatives (SFPI) enable a student to become not just job ready but also a responsible citizen of the country driven by values. We also try to instill leadership skills – something that the world needs.

I recently met a couple of students from our initiative, Vidyadhan (a scholarship program for underserved sections of society). A subsidiary program named V-ABLE enables education for especially abled students. The students were felicitated for their achievements in academics and awarded scholarships for further studies. During my discussion with them, I was inspired by their stories. It is so heartwarming to see children not letting the physical limitations get in the way of their dreams & aspirations. Indeed, education gives them wings and I am truly grateful to be a part of their journey.

Children reflect the progress in society. I believe that every child deserves a chance- a chance for better life, and an opportunity for quality education. By taking an active part in the journey of a child, we are investing in the future of our nation.

We are empowering them with choice and valuing them as individuals. I strongly believe when a child understands the importance of education at an early age, s/he has the potential to break the poverty cycle.

I believe that giving is not about writing cheques. Irrespective of our present situation in life, we have the ability to make a difference in the life of others. You can help an elderly person on the road, you can read to a child, you can share your food with someone- all these are random acts of kindness.

In a country like ours where the needs are so high, each and every act of kindness matter. Each and every act makes a difference to someone’s life setting in motion a cycle of charity and goodwill that makes the world a better place for everyone.
